Cardinal features
Presence of functioning endometrial tissue (glands and stroma) in sites outside the endometrial lining of the uterus
Most common ectopic sites: ovaries, pelvic peritoneum, broad and uterosacral ligaments, and cul-de-sac
Typically presents as progressively worsening dysmenorrhea that may be accompanied by dyspareunia, dyschezia, premenstrual staining, and chronic pelvic pain
Commonly associated with infertility, which is sometimes the only presenting problem
Characteristic menstrual history of short cycle lengths (<28 days), heavy flow lasting 5 days or more, and menses lasting 7 days or more
Recurrence rates, despite medical or conservative surgical treatments, are 20-74%
Pain severity often does not correlate with extent of disease
